Sohyunâs father is always watching TV.
She cannot remember a time where the television is not on, nor can she remember one where her fatherâs back is not turned. The picture, the sofa, his silence, every night. Idiot box, she used to think even though it didnât make her feel any better.
Today it is no different because when Sohyun comes through the door, there it is. Phosphor light in a dark room blaring laugh tracks with too many teeth. Her shoes are wet, and she watches the hard shadow of a finger reach around the armrest to jab once and twice into the center of the remote.

Where have you been? asks Sohyunâs father.
Sohyun will never wear these shoes again. Lake Horsehair, she answers.
He doesnât speak for a while. Just grunts. Now why the hell would you go there?
People go there because itâs the closest thing they have to a beach and it doesnât matter if the shore is half rocks and half beer cans because they can swim, and sunbathe, and have a picnic if theyâre careful to pick a spot that is more rocks than it is beer cans.

Her name was Mayu and she was twenty-three years old. She was good at finding the rocks but sometimes what that really meant was that she couldnât see anything else, and sat down anyway.
Sohyunâs father is laughing. Whatâs so funny, she says.
Ha. He laughs and laughs some more. Finally.
This is serious. Someone is dead, and even when Sohyun says that she is careful to take a spoon and skim the tremor from her voice.
Stubborn thing, he snorts. A different finger appears around the edge of the couch, into the canal where it can pick his ear. Never wanted the baptism and look at her now.
Sohyunâs face is wet and her shoes are cold. I have been wading for hours and drowning for my whole life, she wants to say. I was the one who found her and you know, just last week she said things were looking up.
But Sohyunâs father is watching TV. I always told you, always. Not to go near her.
And Sohyun thinks, why wouldnât you ever teach her how to swim.
